Heads Up: Mondo’s The Raid: Redemption Double-LP

This begs that age-old question: which came first, the poster or the vinyl? Thankfully the answer doesn’t matter in the slightest, because Jock’s The Raid: Redemption poster / album artwork is fantastic no matter the medium. Coming in both black and a randomly inserted smokey gray vinyl, Mondo’s release of The Raid score is sure to please fans of kickass industrial techno (that’s probably not what the genre is called, but it just felt right) and help kickstart those memories of Iko Uwais’ beautifully choreographed murder sprees.

Heads Up: Mondo’s Texas Frightmare Weekend Movie Posters

Remember when Mondo didn’t release a new print every week, let alone three posters in a single day? It was a simpler time. A time when three nickels got you a gallon of gas, a dollar in change, and a liter of milk. Granted, I may be misremembering a few things here or there, but the gist of my recollection remains true, which is to say: things be changing, yo. Fresh off their most recent trip to Texas Frightmare Weekend (AKA a horror hound’s paradise), the folks at Mondo have gathered up the remaining Frightmare stock and will soon be releasing some damn impressive artwork.

Review: Mondo’s Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness Movie Posters

It’s happened again, people. Just when I got comfortable with the knowledge that, huzzah for me, I’ve made it through an entire week and only bought one poster, Mondo goes ahead and releases two must-have prints. In a Sophie’s Choice-like conundrum, I have to decide between Randy Ortiz’s Army of Darkness and Jason Edmiston’s Evil Dead 2. To those who say, “just get both!” I respond, “easier said than done.” Two great prints, two amazing artists, and two incredible films. Damn you, Mondo! Also, thanks for the posters.

Review: Mondo’s Iron Man 3 Movie Posters

You may not have heard, but there’s this little indie called Iron Man 3 that really needs your support this weekend. I vaguely remember reading an article that stated part of its budget was funded on Kickstarter and I’m almost positive that all of the above-the-line crew agreed to make the film gratis, which I thought was really big of them. Long story short, the good folks at Mondo have thrown their weight behind this Mumblecore darling and have announced three new posters inspired by its release, all of which will be going on sale sometime tomorrow (5/3).

Heads Up: Mondo’s Oblivion Double-LP

From what I’ve heard about Oblivion, it’s a really pretty film that features just about every sci-fi cliché out there, which in all honesty, still sounds like a good time to me. And while I haven’t seen the movie yet, I have streamed the entire soundtrack by Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese. It’s definitely enjoyable, although I’m not the biggest let’s-just-relax-and-listen-to-a-film-score sort of person. Granted, there are a few exceptions (Spring Breakers, Midnight in Paris, Attack the Block, Drive, and just about everything John Carpenter did come to mind), but for the most part I like to listen to a soundtrack while I’m watching the movie. That said, I am, as always, hypnotized by Mondo’s incredibly capable stable of artists and might make an attempt at this, if only for the packaging.

Review: Jay Shaw’s Graceland and Pieta Movie Posters

I know you’ve already heard this from me about a hundred times by now, but I’m going to say it again anyway. I’m a huge, ginormous, slobbering fan of Jay Shaw’s art. His work, often residing on the more surreal side of things, always manages to be interesting and evocative. Maybe it’s because his posters are capable of bridging the divide between your erudite friends who claim to live in a television-free household and those acquaintances of yours who have a DVR in every room? Or maybe it’s the subliminal messages he subtly places in every print that can only be understood when played backwards on a record player? (That second one is just a working theory.) Whatever the case may be, here’s the important (and factual) takeaway: everyone enjoys a good Shaw print. It’s also been extremely fascinating watching somebody go from a vocal commenter on Expresso Beans and OMG Posters to a bona fide Mondo artist. Without sounding like an old man, it’s pretty nifty. Also, get off my lawn.

Heads Up: Mondo’s “Game of Thrones” Art Prints Part 2

It’s time for some more Game of Thrones inspired artwork, this time by Toronto-based studio Phantom City Creative and artist Vania Zouravliov. All four posters seem to suggest the interconnectedness of the series’ characters as the figures are literally fused into one another. Additionally, both sets of prints seem to mostly depict the animals that represent each house, which makes this dual release all the more appropriate. If I had to choose a favorite between the two designs, I’d probably go with Zouravliov’s prints for their sheer complexity alone, but it goes without saying that anyone who’s lucky enough to get their hands on what Mondo’s putting out tomorrow should consider themselves blessed. With all that said, I’m nearing Game of Thrones artwork fatigue and am definitely looking forward to seeing Mondo release something non-Thrones related.

Heads Up: Mondo’s Game of Thrones Art Prints

I bid thee, Game of Thrones fans, unite! For Mondo and HBO have seen fit to emancipate not one or two, but three beautiful screen prints to us, the art collecting masses! Let us assemble and make dance! Okay. Okay. I would officially like to apologize for everything that preceded this sentence. I was going for a sort of old-timey fantasy setting lingo, but I think we can all agree that it’s far better left in the hands of someone like George R. R. Martin. Now onto the art!

Poster Per Diem: Martin Ansin’s Taxi Driver Movie Poster

This one’s a little bittersweet for me because, on the one hand, holy shit, it’s a Martin Ansin Taxi Driver poster! Again: holy shit, it’s a Martin Ansin Taxi Driver poster! On the other hand, this print will only be available to the lucky folks attending a screening of the film in Austin next week. Meaning, if you really want to get your hands on one (and honestly, who doesn’t?), then you’d better be prepared to pay a hefty price on the secondary market. But enough whining, it is what it is. And what it is, is a breathtaking piece of artwork by one of the most talented artists in the world for one of the most celebrated films ever made. Ansin skillfully taps into Bickle’s isolation, suggesting that even while Travis is walking the crowded streets of New York City, his inability to communicate with those around him has all but guaranteed a sad and solitary existence.

Heads Up: Tyler Stout’s “Reservoir Dogs” Movie Poster

No surprise here, Tyler Stout has created yet another Stout masterpiece. The man’s already done two stunning posters for Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill, and has now completed the Tarantino hat-trick with his latest release. Per usual, the detail is utterly mind-boggling and fully deserving of our undying love and respect.

FOLLOW UP: Jay Shaw’s “Don’t Go Out Tonight” Art Show

If you’ve never heard of Blue Underground, then there’s a good chance you’ve never experienced some of cinema’s most shocking, action-packed, exploitative, gory, and hilarious guilty pleasures in existence. Founded by William Lustig (the same mad man who brought us Maniac, Vigilante, and Maniac Cop 1, 2, and 3), Blue Underground has become a cineaste’s dream thanks in large part to their exhaustive film restoration and unceasing dedication to sharing the beautiful, strange, and disturbing with us all. Mix in some Jay Shaw, an artist the poster community has come to love over the last year and a half, and who’s been entrusted with creating a show inspired by the titles in Blue Underground’s library, and you’ve got yourself one truly twisted art collection.

I worked with Studio Ghibli and Mondo to create these two posters for one of my favourite movies. I still can’t quite believe this, it’s such a huge honour.
My Neighbor Totoro is a 20x36 8-colour screen print. It’ll be for sale from Mondo soon and, as usual, I will have some signed APs for sale at some point later.
